Maurice, Iowa — A Le Mars man has died in an accident near Maurice.
The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that about 1:25 p.m. on Wednesday, July 5th, 61-year-old Michael Alons of rural Sheldon was driving a 2009 Kenworth truck pulling a grain trailer westbound on 500th Street, three miles south of Maurice. The trailer was fully loaded with feed. They report that 54-year-old Mark Grosenheider of Le Mars was driving a Dodge Dakota pickup southbound on Grant Avenue The pickup struck the grain trailer, became wedged underneath it and was drug several hundred feet west on 500th St. The pickup started on fire and became fully engulfed in flames with the driver trapped inside.
The Sioux Center Ambulance took Alons to Sanford Sheldon Hospital.
Grosenheider died at the scene from injuries sustained in the accident.
The trailer, owned by Hartog Elevator Inc. of Sanborn sustained approximately $100,000 in damage and the Dodge Dakota was a complete loss, according to the Sheriff’s Office. They say the year and owner of the pickup has not been able to be determined at this time because of the severity of the fire.
The Maurice First Responders, Maurice Fire Department, Sioux Center Ambulance Squad, and the Iowa State Patrol assisted the Sheriff’s Office with the response to the accident, which they say remains under investigation.
