Maurice, Iowa — A fire during the burning ban in Sioux County caused a fire call near Maurice on Saturday, November 2nd.
Maurice firefighters were called for a trash pile that was on fire and getting close to cornstalk bales, according to Maurice Fire Chief Jeff Vander Weide. He says when they arrived on the scene, the farmers were moving some bales away from the fire. There were approximately 18 bales lost in the fire, says Vander Weide. He says they put approximately 7000 gallons of water in the burn hole and the farmer covered it with dirt to put the fire out.
The chief tells us the farmers there had burned a different pile earlier in the day, and had a piece of silage tarp that they didn’t think had burned so they threw it on the larger pile to burn at a later time, but the wind stirred it up and started the larger pile.
He says no injuries were reported. They did have mutual aid from the Orange City firefighters, who brought two tankers with water. The firefighters were on the scene for a little over an hour, according to the chief.
Vander Weide says the burning ban continues in Sioux County, so the burning pile shouldn’t have been lit to begin with.
