Spencer, Iowa — A Melvin couple lost their lives in a pickup vs semi crash at the north end of Spencer early Thursday afternoon.
According to a report from the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened at the north intersection of Highways 18 & 71 in far northern Spencer.
Deputies say a 2001 Chevrolet S-10 pickup, driven by 86-year-old Harvey Juber, of Melvin, stopped at a stop sign at the intersection, then pulled into the path of a southbound 2017 Freightliner semi driven by 24-year-old Antwan Hutchinson, of Des Moines.
According to authorities, a passenger in the S-10, 85-year-old Patricia Juber, of Melvin, died in the crash. Harvey Juber was transferred by helicopter to a Sioux Falls hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Neither Hutchinson or his passenger were injured.
Assisting deputies at the scene by the Spencer Police Department, Spencer Fire Department, Iowa State Patrol, Bud’s Tow Service, and the Medical Examiner.
Deputies say the crash remains under investigation.
