Sioux City, Iowa — A Nebraska man will spend more than ten years in federal prison after pleading guilty to one count of Attempted Enticement of a Minor, and Illegally Possessing Ammunition by a Person Previously Convicted of Domestic Abuse.
According to information released by the United States Attorney’s Office in Sioux City, 39-year-old Jeremy Kozak, of Columbus, Nebraska was charged following an investigation by the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
Authorities say Kozak confessed to communicating with an underage victim he knew to be only thirteen years old. Law enforcement became aware of his sexually explicit communications with the victim and took over the victim’s account in an undercover capacity. Believing he was still communicating with a thirteen-year-old, authorities say Kozak made plans to drive the three hours from Nebraska to northwest Iowa, to meet the victim at a local park and engage in sexual activity. Officials say that on August 12th of last year, Kozak arrived at a park where he had instructed the victim to meet him, and after seeing a decoy dressed in the attire Kozak had instructed the victim to wear, drove toward the decoy, but was apprehended by law enforcement.
Inside Kozak’s vehicle, authorities reportedly recovered a box of condoms and shotgun ammunition that was illegal for Kozak to possess due to a previous Domestic Abuse conviction.
Kozak was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Sioux City, and given 128-months in a federal prison. He must also serve a 5-year term of supervised release after his prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.
