Old Chicken Coop, Contents Totaled In Fire Near Ashton

Ashton, Iowa — An old chicken coop and its contents were totaled in a fire on Wednesday, April 13, 2022, near Ashton.

According to Ashton Fire Chief Andy Gacke, about 4:30 p.m., the Ashton Fire Department was called to the report of a structure fire at 5123 210th Street, two miles north of Ashton on Highway 60 and a third of a mile west.

The chief says the fire department saw the fire in the building used mainly for storage was on the verge of flashover when they arrived. He says they first used an interior attack but the fire pushed them back to an exterior attack.

Gacke says no injuries were reported.

He tells us the Sibley and George fire departments assisted at the scene, mainly by hauling water.

He says the cause of the fire appeared to have been stray sparks from a burn barrel.

Chief Gacke reports that they were able to save the structure but the building and its contents were totaled.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about four hours.
