Orange City Teen Airlifted To Sioux City After Two-Moped Collision

Orange City, Iowa — An Orange City teen was airlifted to a Sioux City hospital as the result of a two-moped collision that happened shortly before 6:00 Wednesday evening at the intersection of 470th Street and Indian Avenue, three miles southwest of Orange City.

According to a report from the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened when a 2008 Yamaha moped, driven by 15-year-old Teygan Hiemstra of Orange City was eastbound on 470th Street. Authorities say 14-year-old Cody Van Engen of Orange City was also eastbound on a 2005 Honda moped, behind Hiemstra. Deputies say Hiemstra began to slow to turn left onto Indian Avenue when Van Engen struck the rear of Hiemstra’s moped.

Deputies say Van Engen was transported by the Orange City Ambulance to the Orange City Hospital, and was later flown to MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center in Sioux City for further medical treatment. Hiemstra did not report any injuries.

Deputies estimate damage to each moped at about $500.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Orange City Ambulance, Orange City Fire Department and Orange City Police Department.
