Trio Of Tuesday Morning Crashes Keep Sioux County Deputies Hopping

Sioux County, Iowa — Sioux County authorities were kept busy Tuesday morning with a trio of traffic crashes that occurred one after the other in different parts of the county.

The first crash was reported at 7:35 am on 460th Street (Highway 10), one half-mile west of Granville.

Deputies say 58-year-old Dale Stuhr, of Alta, was driving 2012 Ford F-150 pulling a car trailer westbound on 460th Street. 15-year-old Mara Zazueta, of Granville, was driving a 2014 Volkswagen Jetta westbound on 460th Street behind Stuhr. Stuhr slowed for agricultural equipment on the roadway and Zazueta struck the trailer.

Zazueta and a passenger were transported by the Granville Ambulance to Orange City Area Health for treatment of minor injuries. Stuhr was transported by the Hospers Ambulance to Orange City Area Health for treatment of minor injuries.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Granville Ambulance, Granville Fire Department, Hospers Ambulance, Alton Ambulance and the Iowa State Patrol.

The accident remains under investigation.

Then at 7:43 a.m., on Highway 18 (310th Street), two and one-quarter miles west of Hull.

Deputies say 58-year-old Harv Sandbulte, of Sioux Center, was driving a 2015 International semi-tractor pulling a flatbed trailer eastbound on Highway 18. 18-year-old Thayne Downs, of Rock Valley, was driving a 1998 Chevrolet pickup eastbound on Highway 18 behind Sandbulte. According to the report, Sandbulte slowed to turn left onto a farm driveway and Downs struck the trailer.

Downs was transported by the Hull Ambulance to Sioux Center Health for treatment of minor injuries.

The Chevrolet sustained approximately $10,000 in damage. The trailer sustained an estimated $1,000 in damage.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Hull Fire Department, Hull Ambulance and Sioux Center Police Department.

The accident remains under investigation.

The third mishap took place at 8:04 a.m., at the intersection on 460th Street and Ironwood Avenue, on mile southwest of Orange City.

According to authorities, 37-year-old Joel Leusink, of Orange City, was driving a 2020 Ford F-150 eastbound on 460th Street. 17-year-old Caleb Schrock, of Orange City, was driving a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee northbound on Ironwood Avenue, when the two struck in the intersection.

Both drivers reported minor injuries and sought medical attention on their own.

The Ford sustained approximately $20,000 in damage. The Jeep sustained an estimated $8,000 in damage.

Leusink was cited for failing to yield to a vehicle on the right.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Orange City Police Department.
