Paullina Man Dies As The Result Of Pursuit, Crash

Meriden, Iowa — A Paullina man has died as the result of a pursuit and ensuing accident near Meriden on Friday, November 20, 2020.

The Iowa State Patrol reports that about 10:25 p.m., 26-year-old Matthew Williams of Paullina was driving a 2005 Ford Mustang. They report that a Cherokee County Sheriff’s Deputy attempted to stop the vehicle for a reckless speeding violation on Iowa Highway 3 near Meriden. They say the driver accelerated to attempt to elude the deputy before turning south on county Road L-51. The trooper’s report says the car continued to elude the deputy at a high rate of speed, driving off of the road surface several times. The report says that Williams lost control and went off the west side of the roadway.

The report says Williams was taken to Cherokee Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The trooper says the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and Cherokee County Emergency Management assisted at the scene.
