Rock Rapids, Iowa — The Rock Rapids Fire Department responded to two vehicle fires in one night on Monday evening.
In the first fire, a tow truck for semis was destroyed near Rock Rapids.
According to Rock Rapids Fire Chief Ed Reck, at about 7:00 p.m., the Rock Rapids Fire Department was called to the report of a vehicle fire on Highway 75 on the south edge of Rock Rapids.
When they got there, firefighters saw the truck, which was owned by Trackside Towing of Alvord, fully engulfed with some ditch burning as well. He says they used water and foam to fight the fire.
Reck says no one reported any injuries.
A malfunction under the hood gets the blame for the blaze, which totaled the tow truck.
He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about an hour, and were called back for hot spots a little later.
Then, a little after 10:30 p.m., Rock Rapids firefighters had another call — this one for a car fire behind County Seat Bar and Grill in the City Parking Lot.
The chief says the driver went out to start the vehicle, it turned over, and immediately started on fire. The fire department extinguished the flames, but the car was totaled.
Reck says the firefighters were on the scene for only about 20 minutes.
