Rock Rapids Man Facing Felony Firearms Charge After Meeting At Sheriff’s Office

Rock Rapids, Iowa — A Rock Rapids man has been arrested on a felony firearm charge after a trip to the sheriff’s office.

According to the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, 32-year-old Steven Federico is accused of illegally possessing ammunition. Investigators say Federico is prohibited from having the round due to a prior domestic abuse conviction. He was arrested on Friday.

In his statement, the deputy says Federico came into the sheriff’s office to speak about a no-contact order with a deputy. While there, he was placed under arrest on a warrant for a violation of the protection order. When he was taking Federico into custody, the deputy asked him if he had anything in his pockets before he was searched. That’s when Federico allegedly pulled a 12-gauge shotgun shell from his pocket.

Federico was charged with dominion or control of a firearm or offensive weapon by someone previously convicted of domestic abuse, a class D felony. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison.

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for February 12th.

Federico was booked into the Lyon County Jail in Rock Rapids and was released the next day on his own recognizance on a signature bond.
