Rock Valley Woman, Passenger Escape Injury In Car Versus Train Accident

Doon, Iowa — A Rock Valley woman and her passenger were lucky to walk away from a pickup versus train accident on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, near Doon.

According to the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, at about 5:50 p.m., 21-year-old Caitlin Grace Castaneda of Rock Valley was driving a 2021 Chevrolet Silverado Pickup eastbound on 250th Street, a mile northwest of Doon near Garfield Avenue.

The report says Castaneda did not see a train owned by BNSF Railway southbound on the tracks and she continued across the tracks. The locomotive struck the 2021 Chevrolet in the driver’s side rear, sending it into the south ditch where it overturned and came to a rest on its side.

The sheriff’s office says Castaneda and her passenger were able to exit the vehicle without injuries.

She was cited on a charge of failure to properly stop at a railroad crossing, a simple misdemeanor. The 2021 Chevrolet pickup was projected to be a total loss.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office says the Doon Fire Department and Rescue Unit and K and J Towing assisted with the response to the accident.
