Rural Ocheyedan Home Damaged In Fire

Ocheyedan, Iowa — A house was damaged in a fire on Thursday, August 27, 2020 near Ocheyedan.

According to Ocheyedan Fire Chief Dan Hartwig, about 9:00 a.m., the Ocheyedan Fire Department was called to the report of a possible house fire at 6264 130th Street, three miles north and a mile west of Ocheyedan.

The chief says the fire department made entry into the locked house. He says no one was home. They found the fire in the bathroom. He says they had to knock out some sheetrock to get to the fire, but they were able to extinguish it.

Hartwig says at least one cat was lost due to the fire.

He says the cause of the fire appeared to be a short in the bathroom heater.

Chief Hartwig reports that there was major damage. He says the structure appears okay, but there’s a big mess and lots of smoke damage throughout the house, which he says is not livable in its current condition.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for a couple of hours.
