Sanborn, Iowa — We now have more information about Monday’s bank robbery in Sanborn.
According to a news release from the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 1:02 pm on January 22, 2024, a 911 call was received from the Sanborn Savings Bank reporting a bank robbery. Bank officials reported a black male, entered the bank and handed a bank teller a note. The note said that this was a robbery and demanded cash. No weapons were displayed or referenced during the robbery.
The release says an undetermined amount of cash was taken from the bank at that time and the subject left the scene on foot. Responding officers were on scene at the bank within minutes of the call and a suspect was developed by bank officials’ description. A perimeter was set up by law enforcement around 201 West 5th Street in Sanborn. Announcements to the inhabitants of the residence were made by an Iowa State Patrol hostage negotiator.
As a precaution, schools, banks, daycares, and additional businesses in Sanborn were advised to go into lockdown status until areas were cleared by law enforcement.
At approximately 2:10 pm, Del Martinnez Evans, Jr. was taken into custody without incident.
Evans was transported to the O’Brien County jail where investigators with the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office interviewed him. They tell us he was subsequently charged with Robbery 2nd degree, a class C felony and Theft 2nd degree, a class D felony. He was booked into the O’Brien County Jail, with a bond of $15,000.
A search warrant for 201 West 5th Street was obtained and served by law enforcement. Law Enforcement was clear of the scene by 8:00 pm.
The sheriff’s office says the investigation is still ongoing. Agencies on the scene in Sanborn and assisting were the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, Sanborn Police, Iowa State Patrol, Sheldon Police, Hartley Police, O’Brien County EMA, Sheldon Community Ambulance, and the O’Brien County Attorney’s Office.
