Sutherland, Iowa — A shed was damaged in a fire on Thursday, June 25, 2020, near Sutherland.
According to Sutherland Fire Chief Mark Shriver, about 8:50 p.m., the Sutherland and Calumet fire departments were called to the report of embers on a barn at 6422 470th Street, half a mile west of Sutherland or a mile and a half north of Calumet and a mile and a half east.
The chief says people were clearing trees and old buildings from the property and had started a burn pile fire to dispose of some of it. He says some embers from that fire apparently landed on a wooden silo and shed. He says the shed did have machinery in it, so they called 911.
He says the Sutherland firefighters were able to put out the fire on the roof with their deck gun and the Calumet firefighters took a hand line into the structure and made quick work of a small fire inside.
Shriver says no injuries were reported.
Chief Shriver reports that two to three square-feet of shingles were destroyed.
He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about 15 minutes.
Calumet Fire Chief Korey Dau says the operation was fairly smooth and a quick response time prevented further damage.
