Shed Two-Thirds Destroyed In Fire Near Rock Valley Thursday

Rock Valley, Iowa– A machine shed once used as a hog building was severely damaged in a fire on Thursday, December 22, 2022, near Rock Valley.

According to Rock Valley Fire Chief Brent Eshuis, at about 10:00 a.m., the Rock Valley Fire Department was called to the report of a shed fire at 2659 310th Street, just east of the Rock Valley city limits, across Highway 18 south of Kooima Company.

The chief says the fire department saw the building engulfed in flame, with some of the roof already collapsed as they approached the scene. He says they used water to fight the fire.

Eshuis says no injuries were reported.

The fire department was assisted by the Sioux Center, Doon, and Hull fire departments.

He says the cause of the fire appeared to be possibly related to a Knipco-style portable heater, but the cause is officially undetermined.

Chief Eshuis reports that two-thirds of the older building was destroyed in the blaze, but they were able to extinguish it before it got to the tractors that were also stored there.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for an hour and 45 minutes.
