Sheldon, Iowa — A Sheldon business building was damaged in a fire on Wednesday evening, February 1st.
According to Sheldon Fire Chief Brad Hindt, the Sheldon Fire Company was paged out just before 6:10 p.m. to 104 North 4th Avenue, the location of Kamies Plumbing & Heating, for a fire in the wall of the garage.
He says when firefighters arrived, they found the outside of the building had charred wood and a small fire around the chimney pipe coming out of the wall on the back side of the building next to the Eagles Club. The owner of the building was inside trying to remove the plywood sheeting to get at the fire to put out the fire with a garden hose. Firefighters entered the building and continued to remove the inside plywood and put out the fire found inside the walls. A second group of firefighters removed the outside siding and sheeting to check for hot spots.
Hindt tells us that the origin of the fire was a hot chimney from a wood-burning heating unit.
Hindt says firefighters used about 300 gallons of water and foam. Highway 18 was rerouted for about an hour for a supply line that was laid from the fire hydrant.
According to Hindt, the firefighters were on the scene for a little over an hour.
The Sheldon Police Department, Sheldon Community Ambulance Team, and Sheldon EMA assisted Sheldon Fire.
