Sheldon Man Faces Felony Charge After Meeting Officers With A Sword

Sheldon, Iowa — A Sheldon man has been arrested on a felony interference charge after an incident in Sheldon.

According to a criminal complaint filed with the O’Brien County Clerk of Court’s Office by the Sheldon Police, 62-year-old Hiram Meadows of Sheldon is accused of refusing to drop a sword he was holding when police told him to. He was arrested on Sunday.

In his statement, the officer says Meadows was called in to law enforcement for allegedly threatening his wife with a sword. When law enforcement arrived, Meadows came to the door with the sword and refused to drop it when given commands. The officer says Meadows continued to refuse commands to drop the sword after a taser was used. Once he was disarmed, he allegedly continued to resist arrest, says the report. Meadows was handcuffed after a few Taser deployments and physical force was used, according to the officer.

Meadows was charged with interference with official acts with a dangerous weapon, a class D felony. If convicted, Meadows could face up to five years in prison. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of domestic abuse assault while displaying or using a weapon.

He faces a preliminary hearing on the charges on September 9th.

At last report, Meadows remained in the O’Brien County Jail in Primghar in lieu of bond.
