Sheldon Teen Crashes After Falling Asleep At The Wheel

Sheldon, Iowa — A Sheldon teen was transported to the hospital as the result of a single-vehicle crash at the southern edge of Sheldon Monday evening (June 22nd).

According to Sheldon police, the mishap occurred around 8:00 Monday evening on Business 60 South, near the new Maintainer facility. According to police, a 2006 Dodge Caravan, driven by 17-year-old Mya Riddle was northbound on Business 60 South when she reportedly fell asleep at the wheel, crossed the southbound lane of traffic and struck a light pole, severing it at ground level. Police say the van then swerved back across the roadway and entered the east ditch, travelling north through the ditch before coming to rest.

According to authorities Riddle was transported to the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center by the Sheldon Community Ambulance Team for treatment of, what the accident report describes as, “minor injuries.”

Riddle was reportedly cited for Failure to Maintain Control. Damage to her van is estimated at $3,000, while damage to the light pole, which is owned by MidAmerican Energy, is estimated at $1,000.
