UPDATE: Mystery Solved – Shots Fired Call Turns Up Nothing

Sheldon, Iowa — We now have an answer to the noises that were reported to Sheldon Police as “shots fired” in far western Sheldon Tuesday morning.

Someone reported hearing six shots in rapid succession near the Sheldon Motel on Highway 18 West. Sheldon Police and Sioux County deputies responded to the call, and, according to Sheldon Police Chief Lyle Bolkema, talked to several different people in the area who heard the “shots” but gave varying locations about where the sound might have come from.

Bolkema said the investigation uncovered no spent shell casing, or any other evidence that any shots had, in fact, been fired.

Shortly after this story hit the news on KIWA radio, we received a caller from a listener who owns a business in the area, and he told us that the noise came from an old jeep that was backfiring as it moved down the highway. He described the backfires as sounding like a small caliber rifle firing.

KIWA passed that information along to the Sheldon Police Department, and we were told that they had come to a similar conclusion, but were happy to have the information from the eye-witness.

So, the mystery is solved, and now we know, as Paul Harvey used to say, the rest of the story.
