Sioux Center, Iowa — The Sioux Center Fire Department has been busy recently. After they were called to what turned out to be a controlled burn on Tuesday, they have had two more calls, according to Sioux Center Fire Chief David Van Holland.
Van Holland tells us that the grass fire was in southeastern Sioux Center east of the end of 17th Street Southeast. He says someone had dumped some hot embers out of a fire pit, which caught wind and burned a corn stubble field. He says between five and six acres burned, but since it was just stubble, there was no value. He says they fought the fire with water, and people also brought a disk and some payloaders to help fight the fire.
Van Holland says the fire department also responded to another grass fire on Thursday morning.
The chief reminds people to be careful with fire, especially when winds are strong. He says when you aren’t careful, you put lives at risk — even more so now, since firefighters have to come together despite social distancing protocols to fight a fire.
