Sioux Center, Iowa — A Sioux Center man was injured in a 3-vehicle crash in downtown Sioux Center late Saturday morning.
According to the Sioux Center Police Department, the mishap took place about 11:20 Saturday morning at the intersection of Highway 75 and 2nd Street North. Police say a 2002 Buick Century, driven by 81-year old Marlene Disch, of Sioux Center, was westbound on 2nd Street Northeast, and had stopped for the stop sign. Police say Disch told them that, as she attempted to cross Highway 75, she saw a southbound 1989 Mercury Marquis, driven by 74-year old Wayne De Weerd, of Sioux Center. Disch reportedly told police that when she saw De Weerd’s car, she attempted to step on the brake, but hit the gas instead, causing her car to collide with Deweerd’s vehicle.
Police say that, after colliding with De Weerd, Disch’s car continued across Highway 75, striking a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban, driven by 46-year old Jill De Ruyter of Boyden, which was stopped at the stop sign on 2nd Street Northwest, facing eastbound.
According to police, Wayne De Weerd was transported to the Sioux Center Hospital by Sioux Center Ambulance for treatment of injuries.
Officials estimate damage to Disch’s Buick at $4-thousand, with damage to De Weerd’s Mercury estimated at $3-thousand, and damage to De Ruyter’s Suburban at $1-thousand.
Police say Disch was ticketed for Failure To Yield Right of Way From a Stop Sign.
