Rock Rapids, Iowa — A Sioux Falls woman is behind bars in Rock Rapids facing four felony counts after she is alleged to have committed fraud by check.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office reports they arrested 52-year-old Lynelle Schemmel of Sioux Falls on a warrant on Tuesday, March 22nd. Schemmel faces four counts of forgery, a class D felony, as well as misdemeanor charges of identity theft and fifth-degree theft.
Schemmel is accused of writing checks on a closed account and writing a check on an account owned by a northwest Iowan who had previously reported check blanks stolen. These alleged events are said to have taken place in late January 2022 at an Inwood convenience store.
Another similar incident is alleged to have taken place at a Lester convenience store in mid-February, 2022. Schemmel is accused of writing another check there on the same account of the northwest Iowan who had reported checks stolen.
At last report, Schemmel remained in the Lyon County Jail in Rock Rapids in lieu of a $25,000 cash or surety bond.
