Sioux County, Iowa — A St. Louis man faces criminal charges following an incident in the wee hours of Saturday that began near Alton.
The Orange City Police Department says one of their officers spotted an SUV parked in the parking area near the borrow pit near Alton. The officer says he found an individual who was apparently sleeping behind the wheel of the parked vehicle. Authorities say when the officer attempted to make sure the driver was ok he woke up and rather than rolling down his window to talk to the officer, allegedly put his vehicle in gear and attempted to flee, but in the process crashed into barrier poles in the parking area. Orange City Police say the man then fled on foot.
According to court documents, after fleeing on foot, the subject, who authorities identify as 26-year-old Daniel Chiodini, allegedly went to a rural Alton farm and found a Chevy Silverado pickup in a back shed on the property, Court documents say Chiodini allegedly stole the pickup and drove it to Hawarden, where he checked himself into the hospital for treatment of injuries he suffered when he crashed his SUV.
Court documents say Chiodini allegedly gave a false name and date of birth to nurses at the Hawarden hospital. He then is alleged to have refused to say anything, and would not say where they key to the pickup was.
As a result, court records show that Chiodini is charged with 3rd Degree Burglary for allegedly entering the shed where the pickup was parked, and 2nd Degree Theft for allegedly stealing the vehicle. Both crimes are Class D Felonies.
In addition, Sioux County arrest records indicate that Chiodini was charged with the misdemeanor crimes of Criminal Trespass, and Interference With Official Acts.
