Strong Winds Re-Ignite Burn Pile; Trees & Hay Bales Destroyed

George, Iowa — Trees and a couple of hay bales were destroyed in a fire on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, near George.

According to George Fire Chief Bill Sprock, at about 11:45 a.m., the George Fire Department was called to the report of a brush fire at 2077 Jefferson Avenue, on the edge of the George City limits– about a mile west and a little north of Frontier Bank.

When they got there, the chief says the fire department saw three trees, a small square hay bale, and a burn pile on fire. He says they used water and foam to fight the fire.

Sprock says no injuries were reported.

The fire department was assisted by the George Emergency Medical Service (or GEMS).

He says the cause of the fire was that the burn pile had been reignited by strong winds.

Chief Sprock reports that dollar-wise, the damage was minimal.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene a little over an hour.
