Student Taken To Hospital After Crash

Maurice, Iowa — A 12-year-old was taken to a hospital after a crash near Maurice on Monday, January 29.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that about 2:15 p.m., 57-year-old Darla Utesch of Akron was driving a 2007 Ford Freestyle SUV westbound on Highway 10, by a railroad crossing near the Highway 75 intersection, two miles north of Maurice. The Ford was being operated as a marked school bus. They report that 26-year-old Matthew Broscha of Vermilion, SD was driving a 2014 Freightliner Utilitymaster truck westbound on Highway 10 behind Utesch.

The report says Utesch stopped for the BNSF Railroad crossing (as required of school buses by Iowa code) and Broscha struck Utesch.

The Sioux Center Ambulance took a 12-year-old student‐passenger in the Ford to the Sioux Center Health Hospital.

The report says the Ford sustained about $4,500 in damage. The Freightliner sustained about $4,500 in damage.

They say Broscha was cited on a charge of following too closely.
