Suspect In Lake Park Shooting Dead After Turning Gun On Self

Spirit Lake, Iowa – The suspect in a shooting Tuesday afternoon at a rural Lake Park residence has died after shooting himself.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office says it all started when the Communications Center reported getting a call from Lakes Regional Healthcare of a man who came to the emergency room with gunshot wounds. Law enforcement arrived and determined that 46-year-old Nakoma Wells of Spirit Lake had been shot in an incident at 1818 130th Street in rural Lake Park. Upon further investigation, the suspect shooter was identified as 32-year-old Samuel Alan Stoller of Spirit Lake.

Law enforcement arrived at the 130th Street address where they determined Stoller had entered the residence unannounced and confronted Wells and another occupant, who wasn’t injured. Wells was able to flee the scene and drove himself to the hospital.

Law enforcement secured a perimeter around the home and a deputy made contact with Stoller by phone, trying to get him to come outside and surrender. Stoller then turned the gun on himself. Law enforcement entered the residence and secured the scene. Stoller was taken to Lakes Regional Healthcare with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. They tell us he died as he was being transferred to a Des Moines hospital.

Authorities say the incident remains under investigation.
