Orange City, Iowa — Sioux County authorities were summoned to the report of a two-vehicle accident shortly before 4:00 Monday afternoon at the intersection of Highway 10 and Hickory Avenue, three miles west of Orange City.
Sioux County deputies say a 2015 Ford Taurus, driven by 67-year-old Derek Thompson of Boone was eastbound on Highway 10, and 64-year-old Nyla Harskamp of Orange City was southbound on Hickory Avenue in a 2015 Thomas school bus transporting students from Orange City’s Unity Christian High School. Officials say Harskamp stopped for the stop sign at the Highway 10, then drove into the intersection, colliding with the Thompson car.
Thompson was transported by the Orange City Ambulance to the Orange City Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Of the 11 students on the bus, two were transported by the Orange City Ambulance to the Orange City Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, according to authorities.
Deputies estimate about $5,000 in damage to Thompson’s car, and about $3,000 to the school bus.
Harskamp was reportedly cited for failing to yield from a stop sign.
Sioux County deputies were assisted at the scene by the Orange City Fire Department and Orange City Ambulance.
