Truck Driver Flown To Sioux Falls Hospital After Accident

Sheldon Fastert Truck Accident 4-10-17Sheldon, Iowa — A Rock Rapids truck driver was injured in an accident near Sheldon on Monday morning.

According to the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office, just before 8:00 a.m., 29-year-old Josh Van Beek of Orange City was driving a 2009 Freightliner MidAmerican Energy utility truck southbound of McKinley Avenue, about three and a half miles south of Sheldon. They say 27-year-old Owen Fastert of Rock Rapids was driving a 2015 Peterbilt semi‐truck pulling a dairy tank trailer northbound on McKinley Avenue, when they say he crossed the center of the roadway and struck Van Beek. The Peterbilt and trailer entered the west ditch and rolled.

Fastert was trapped in the vehicle and required extrication by the Hospers Fire Department. SCAT took Fastert to Sanford Sheldon Hospital. The sheriff’s Office says he was later flown to Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD for further treatment of his injuries. Van Beek did not report any injuries, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Freightliner driven by Van Beek sustained about $6,000 in damage. The Fastert Peterbilt and trailer sustained about $250,000 in damage.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that the Iowa State Patrol, Hospers Fire Department, Hospers Ambulance squad, Sheldon Community Ambulance Team, the Sheldon Police Department and the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office assisted them with the response to the accident, which they say remains under investigation.
