Melvin, Iowa — Two people were killed and five people were injured in an accident near Melvin on Sunday, August 20, 2023.
The Iowa State Patrol reports that at about 9:15 a.m., 27-year-old Dore Hernandes Canales of Sioux City was driving a 2005 GMC Envoy eastbound on A34, two miles west and three north of Melvin. They tell us that 22-year-old Benjamin Gibson of Sibley was southbound on Highway 59 in a 2016 Ford Explorer.
The report says that Hernandes Canales failed to stop and/or yield at a stop sign. Gibson struck the Hernandes Canales SUV on the left side. Both vehicles exited the intersection. The trooper says the Hernandes Canales vehicle rolled and struck a water tower.
Killed in the accident were 24-year-old Yessica Del Carmen Granados Rubio of Sioux City and a 9-year-old child.
The Sibley Ambulance took Hernandes Canales to the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley. Another Sibley Ambulance took 54-year-old Edith Marina Canales Rivas to Sanford Sheldon Hospital. SCAT took Gibson to Sanford Sheldon Hospital.
Two children, ages 6 and 10 were also reported to have been injured, according to the report.
The trooper says the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, the Sheldon Community Ambulance Team, the Melvin and Sanborn fire departments, the Sheldon Police Department, and Boji Towing assisted with the response to the accident.
