Hull, Iowa — A Hull man was taken to the hospital, and a second taken to jail, after a UTV (Utility Terrain Vehicle) near Hull in the wee hours of Wednesday Morning.
According to the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office, shortly after 1:00 am Wednesday, they were called to a UTV mishap a mile north of Hull on Ibex Avenue. Deputies say a 2021 Polaris Ranger UTV, driven by 27-year-old Johann Louw, of Hull, was northbound on Ibex Avenue when he lost control of the machine, entered the west ditch and rolled.
Authorities say Louw was transported by the Hull Ambulance to Sioux Center Health for treatment of his injuries. A passenger, 30-year-old Helgard Vrey, of Hull, did not report injuries and was transported to his residence. Deputies say due to consumption of alcohol, Vrey was told to stay there and not operate any vehicles.
The Polaris was not damaged.
Deputies say they suspected that Louw may possibly have been under the influence of alcohol and were at Sioux Center Health conducting that investigation when it was discovered that Vrey had driven a vehicle to the hospital.
As a result, Vrey was arrested and transported to the Sioux County Jail where he was charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated; charges for Louw are possible pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation, according to authorities.
The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Hull Ambulance, Hull Fire Department, Sioux Center Police Department and Rock Valley Police Department.
