Ashton, Iowa — Two California residents were hospitalized Monday afternoon as the result of a single-vehicle crash near Ashton.
According to authorities, the mishap occurred shortly before 4:00 Monday afternoon when a 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe, driven by 41-year-old Gilbert Anthony Chavez, of Montebello California, was southbound on Highway 60 about one-half mile north of Ashton, when deputies say the SUV left the roadway. Chavez reportedly overcorrected, causing the Tahoe to roll several times and come to rest upside down in the northbound lane. According to authorities, Chavez was ejected from the vehicle.
Chavez and a female passenger, 32-year-old Dezirae Ann Barela, also of Montebello California, were both transported to the Osceola Regional Health Center with incapacitating injuries.
The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Sibley Ambulance, Ashton Ambulance, Ashton Fire Department, Iowa State Patrol and Pulver Towing.
Deputies say the accident remains under investigation.
