Corn, Bin Damaged In Hawarden Fire

Hawarden, Iowa — Some corn and a grain bin were damaged in a fire on Friday, November 15, 2019, near Hawarden.

According to Hawarden Fire Chief Duane Schiefen, about 9:00 a.m., the Hawarden Fire Department was called to the report of a grain bin fire at 1717 460th Street, a mile south of the Highway 12 and Highway 10 intersection and two miles east.

The chief says the fire was inside the corn in the bin, so they couldn’t do much with water. He says they had to stand by while the bin was emptied before they could do anything about the fire.

Schiefen says no injuries were reported.

The fire department was assisted by the Akron and Ireton Fire Departments.

He says the cause is undetermined, but it likely had something to do with the grain dryer as the dryer was turned on and 10 minutes later, the fire was noticed.

Chief Schiefen reports that some corn was destroyed and the bin had heat damage.

He says about 20 firefighters responded and were on the scene until about noon.
