Sanborn, Iowa — An Orange City truck driver and a Sanborn firefighter were both taken to the hospital after their trucks collided at the east edge of Sanborn late Thursday afternoon.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the crash occurred at the west intersection of Highways 18 and 59 near Prairie View Home shortly before 4:18 pm Thursday.
Troopers say a 2007 Peterbilt tanker truck, owned by the Sanborn Fire Department and driven by 34-year-old Adam Roelfs of Sanborn, was northbound on Eastern Street, running in emergency status, responding to a fire northeast of Sanborn. According to authorities, the fire department truck was attempting to cross Highway 18 when it was struck by a westbound 2000 Sterling semi tractor-trailer rig, owned by B&M Concrete of Sioux Falls, and driven by 67-year-old Donald Van Der Ziel of Orange City.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the semi struck the fire truck in the back dual tires, causing it to spin and flip onto its side.
Troopers report that both Roelfs and Van Der Ziel were transported to the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center by Sanborn Ambulance, with what the report describes as suspected minor injuries.
Troopers reportedly ticketed Roelfs for Failure to Yield Upon Entering a Through Highway.
Each vehicle sustained an estimated $50,000 damage in the crash, according to the report.
