Seven Fire Departments Fight Hog Confinement Fire

Hawarden, Iowa — A hog confinement and all the hogs inside were destroyed in a fire recently near Hawarden.

According to Hawarden Fire Chief Duane Schiefen, in the late afternoon, the Hawarden Fire Department was called to the report of a hog barn on fire at 1850 460th Street, three miles east, a mile south, and another half mile east of Hawarden.

The chief says the fire department saw the roof was on fire of the approximately 40′ by 400′ building as they approached the scene.

Schiefen says all the hogs were lost in the blaze, but no injuries were reported to people.

The fire department was assisted by Ireton, Sioux Center, Maurice, Akron, Alcester (SD), and Rock Valley fire departments.

He says the cause of the fire is undetermined.

Chief Schiefen reports that the building was totaled.

He says the Hawarden firefighters who responded were on the scene for about four and a half hours.
