Sheldon Fire Co. Called To Fire Near Sheldon Residence

Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon Fire Company was paged out to the report of a leaf fire next to a home late Monday evening.

Assistant Fire Chief Brad Hindt says an alert neighbor spotted the blaze at 609 6th Avenue at about 10:30 Monday night, and summoned the fire department. Hindt says the fire was in a pile of leaves located next to the home. He says the resident extinguished most of the fire by the time firefighters arrived, but firefighters found some hot spots behind the home’s siding. He says fire crews removed some of the siding to get to the hot spots, and extinguish them.

Hindt blames the fire on discarded smoking items on a bucket on the home’s porch, which started on fire and fell into the pile of leaves next to the house.

Hindt says the blaze caused minor damage to the home’s siding.

Firefighters were on the scene for about 30 minutes.
