Spirit Lake Man To Federal Prison On Firearms Charge

Sioux City, Iowa — A Spirit Lake man will spend more than 5-years in a federal prison after admitting to being a felon in possession of a firearm.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Sioux City, 30-year-old Dylan Robert Hurd, of Spirit Lake, entered a guilty pleas to the charge back in February.

Authorities say at the plea hearing, Hurd admitted to knowing he was restricted from possessing a firearm after being convicted in 2017 of assault causing serious bodily injury in Dickinson County. Hurd also admitted to knowingly possessing a .380 ACP caliber Smith & Wesson M&P handgun.

Hurd was sentenced in Sioux City by United States District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand to 63 months’ imprisonment. He must also serve a 3-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.

Hurd is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.
