Sheldon, Iowa — It appears the race for the right to represent the residents of Sheldon’s 2nd Ward on the City Council will be a three-way race, barring any write-in campaigns.
The deadline to file papers has come and gone and a trio of 2nd Ward residents have filed nomination papers for the June 8th special election. The three candidates whose names will be on the ballot are: Sandra Johnson, who filed her paperwork last week; Madeline Kopel, who filed her paperwork this past Wednesday; and Ken Snyder, who turned in his paperwork Friday morning. The filing deadline was 5:00 pm Friday.
To get their name on the ballot, candidates had to obtain at least ten signatures of residents of the City’s 2nd Ward. Johnson’s paperwork contained twenty signatures, while Kopel’s bore ten and Snyder’s was signed by eighty residents of the 2nd Ward.
The 2nd Ward seat became vacant with the resignation of former Councilman Shawn Broesder. The City had initially intended to appoint a 2nd Ward resident to fill the empty seat through the end of Broesder’s unexpired term, which ends January 1st. Plans changed when residents of the 2nd Ward presented a petition calling for an election to fill that position. The seat will again be on the November ballot for the next full term.
Voting will be held Tuesday, June 8th at the Crossroads Pavilion Event Center. Voting is limited residents of Sheldon’s 2nd Ward, which extends from Western Avenue east to Washington Avenue, and from 8th Street to the north City Limits.
