Annual Heroes Behind The Badges Blood Drive Is Monday: Sign Up Now

Sheldon, Iowa — An event that’s becoming a tradition in Sheldon is coming up on Monday (February 22nd). The annual Heroes Behind The Badges Blood Drive will be held at KIWA Radio.

Rita Nelson with the Community Blood Bank tells us it’s all about helping people who need blood and honoring our heroes.

(as said) “We are so excited. We have been struggling a little bit meeting the demands here. So we’re excited to have people come out and save a life on Monday in Sheldon. It’s just a fun way  to challenge each other to get people out to donate. You can come and cast your vote for the police department or the fire department and it’s just a fun competition and see who wins at the end. But the real winner is the patients that receive the blood and what we’re trying to do is encouraging everyone to come out and save a life.”

As in previous years, the firefighters and police officers are teaming up with the two other emergency responder departments. One team will be the firefighters and Emergency Management (EMA) and the other team will be the police officers and the Sheldon Community Ambulance Team (SCAT).

Nelson says unlike in previous years, you can’t just show up at the bloodmobile. You will need to make an appointment.

(as said) “Due to COVID, we are making sure we’re social distancing and being able to clean in between all donors. So we’d have to have you go to our website which is cbblifeblood.org and go to events and you’ll find the Sheldon event there and you can sign up for a time and it’s pretty easy. It’s pretty simple and then you can come at your designated appointment time. And so there will be no waiting. You‘ll get right in and within 30 minutes help save the lives of three different patients. How easy is that?”

The team of emergency responders who wins gets a traveling trophy and bragging rights.

The drive will be on Monday, February 22nd from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and again from 3 to 5 p.m. at our studios and offices in downtown Sheldon. Again that’s KIWA Radio, 411 9th Street, Sheldon, Iowa.
