Big Sioux Ice Fishing Clinic To Be Saturday After Two Postponements

Hawarden, Iowa — Will the third time be the charm with ice fishing on the Big Sioux River? We’ll find out this weekend.

Sunday Ford, the Environmental Education Coordinator for the Sioux County Conservation Board tells us the first time their public ice fishing clinic was supposed to be in January, but the weather ruined their plans. Then, it was supposed to be last week, but the arctic temperatures threw another monkey wrench into the works.

She says it’s now scheduled for this Saturday, February 20th from 10 to noon at Big Sioux Rec Area.

Ford tells us if you’re looking for something to do outdoors this winter — or if you have always wanted to try ice fishing, but didn’t have the equipment or guidance, or maybe you just want to join their group for a day on the ice — the public ice fishing clinic is for you. She says it will be hosted by the Sioux County Conservation Board and will take place on Saturday, February 20th from 10 to noon at Big Sioux Rec Area near Hawarden.

Ford encourages you to bring the family, sack lunches, and a bucket for your seat. The day includes ice fishing instructions and equipment to use. She says they will drill holes, and the bait is provided. No day park passes are needed during the program.

If you or your child is 16 years of age or older, they need valid fishing licenses to actively fish. Pre-registration is required at www.siouxcountyparks.org.

And by the way, the weather for Saturday sounds perfect for ice fishing. Not warm enough to melt ice in the shade, but much above zero. The forecast high should be around 27, with a partly sunny sky.
