Another Case Of Bird Flu In Greater Northwest Iowa

Pocahontas, Iowa — While not in our immediate area, the bird flu is showing up again in northwest Iowa.

Another case of highly pathogenic avian influenza, or HPAI, has been confirmed in Pocahontas county. The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship says it was detected in a commercial turkey flock. It comes on the heels of another case of HPAI that was discovered last week in Buena Vista county, also in a commercial turkey flock.

The agency says commercial and backyard flock owners should prevent contact between their birds and wild birds. Producers suspecting signs of HPAI in their flocks should contact their veterinarian immediately. Possible cases must also be reported to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the recent HPAI detections in birds do not present a public health concern.
