Area Counties Affected by Flooding Last Summer Receiving Federal Dollars

Northwest Iowa — The Department of Housing and Urban Development is distributing over 134 million dollars to 29 Iowa counties, including several in the area, that were affected by flooding last summer.

Approximately 80 percent of the federal dollars will go to four counties that were declared the “most impacted and distressed.” Those would be Cherokee, Clay, Sioux, and Woodbury counties. The rest of the money will be spread among the remaining 25 counties that received a FEMA Disaster Declaration, including Lyon, Osceola, O’Brien, and several other counties.

HUD says the money can support infrastructure such as flood protection, stormwater systems, drinking water, and sewage. It can also cover disaster damage repair and the construction of new single-family homes for low—to moderate-income families.

The Iowa Economic Development Authority encourages anyone affected by the flooding to fill out their online survey on what needs are still unmet following the flood. You can take the survey by clicking this link.
