Bacon Lovers Relax, Bacon Shortage Not As Dire As Reported

pigs_riNorthwest Iowa — If you’re a bacon lover….and who isn’t…..the recent report of a looming bacon shortage might have caused you to hyperventilate.  But you can take a deep breath and breathe a sigh of relief, the situation isn’t as dire as the report first indicated.

USDA Livestock Market Analyst Shayle Shagam explains.

Those stocks have since been replenished and the bacon supply is plentiful. In fact, Shagam predicts there will be a five-percent increase in pork production this year.

While bacon consumers will appreciate the lower prices, pork producers won’t, as they’re enduring several years of low commodities prices and higher input costs.

A 250-pound pork belly yields about 23 pounds of bacon. Americans eat almost 1.7-billion pounds of bacon each year.
