Carlin Picked To Be New HMS Superintendent

Hartley, Iowa — The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Community School District will soon have a new superintendent.

School officials say that Mr. Patrick Carlin has verbally accepted the position and will be the new superintendent pending a formal background check and board approval.

They say that Carlin was chosen from an original pool of 16 candidates. The HMS Board of Education worked with Grundmeyer Leader Search Consultants and identified six candidates as semi-finalists from the applicant pool. These candidates were screened by the school board and administrative team on Tuesday, March 13th. Three finalists interviewed with district and community stakeholders on Monday, March 19th. District officials tell us that feedback from these formal interviews was shared with the school board to advise their decision to offer Mr. Carlin the position.

Mr. Carlin is currently the Elementary Principal, Curriculum Director, and Transportation Director for Dunkerton Schools in Dunkerton, Iowa. He has also served as an instructional coach for Waterloo Schools and Assistant Regional Coordinator for Keystone Area Education Agency. Carlin is also an adjunct instructor at Upper Iowa University where he was honored with the Excellence in Teaching Award in 2014-15. Carlin and his wife, Stacy, have two elementary-age children.

Carlin says, “I am very honored and excited to be joining the Hawk family! I look forward to collaborating with the community, staff, and students to best serve the HMS School District and community.”

District officials tell us that he will be transitioning into his new role with current Superintendent Bill Thompson and will officially begin his duties on July 1, 2018.
