Community Center Receives Grant

Sutherland, Iowa — Work on the new one and a half million dollar Legion Community Center in Sutherland continues.

The project was recently given a shot in the arm by a Vision Iowa “CAT” grant. “CAT” in this case stands for Community Attraction and Tourism. The grant is for nearly three hundred thousand dollars toward the total.

According to chairman of the R.L. Johannsen Community Center board, Steve Koch, it’s hoped the building will be a nice place to have a number of community functions. He says it is planned to include a meeting room, kitchen, restrooms and a storage area for the Legion’s medical equipment that they loan out. It is also to have some space that can be leased to the city for use as the city offices.

If you want more information, you can email sutherlandcommunitycenter@hotmail.com or call 712-446-3834. Koch says they are a 501(c)(3) organization, so all donations to the new community center are tax-deductible.
