Sheldon, Iowa — When the Sheldon City Council meets Wednesday afternoon they’re expected to appoint a new mayor for the city, and get an update on last week’s inspection of the H.C. Lane Building downtown.
Earlier the City had solicited Letters of Interest from anyone in the community interested in being appointed mayor to replace former mayor Katricia Meendering who resigned to accept a position as general manager of the Crossroads Pavilion Event Center. Four individuals; Fred Grien, Wayne Barahona, Bob Engel and Greg Geels all submitted Letters of Interest. During Wednesday’s council meeting the four will each make an opening statement, then the council will ask questions of each candidate, followed by a closing statement from each man. The council will then deliberate, and are expected to appoint one of the four. That appointment will be effective April 15th. Should the council appoint Geels to the mayor’s position, they will then have to go about filling the At-Large Council position that Geels currently holds.
In other business, the Council will be asked close the east end of the alley behind the H.C. Lane Building downtown. The State Building Inspector expressed concerns that the east end of the south wall of the Lane Building is in danger of collapse, after inspecting the building late last week. The Council will also be asked to begin the dangerous building process in connection with the H.C. Lane Building. City Manager Sam Kooiker says the City’s goal is to require the owner of the building to take the steps necessary to stabilize and repair the structure.
Immediately following the council meeting, the city will host the first of three community meetings on the proposed Utility Franchise with MidAmerican Energy. That meeting will continue until 8:00 Wednesday evening.
Wednesday’s meeting of the Sheldon City Council will begin at 4:30 pm in Council Chambers at the Sheldon Community Services Center.
