Council To Hold Public Hearing On Former Rec Bowl Property

Sheldon, Iowa — When the Sheldon City Council meets this Wednesday, December 16th, they’ll hold a Public Hearing on matters concerning the former Rec Bowl site at the intersection of 3rd Avenue and Park Street.

The Rec Bowl/Budd-Z’s building was destroyed in an arson fire in 2013. In 2015 the city cleaned up the property at taxpayer expense. The main principal owner of the property died in January of this year. The current occupant of the property is Sheldon Power and Equipment, but the ownership issues mean the property is undevelopable and not generating property taxes. As a result, it is considered “blighted” under Sheldon’s Urban renewable authority. The city hopes to resolve this issue and Wednesday’s Public Hearing is the next step in that process.

The Council is also expected to approve the project closeout and transfer of the property at 1023 Garfield Avenue. Kerwin and Kathy Sterler have removed the nuisance building on the property and cleaned up the lot to make way for a newer home. They plan to place the home on the market soon.

Among other items, the Council will be asked to ratify an offer to Trevor Cast to be the Recreation Coordinator for the City in a position shared with NCC.  Cast comes to Sheldon from Manning, Iowa.  He is a recent graduate of the University of Northern Iowa and his most recent position was with the Geneseo Park District in Geneseo, Illinois.

Wednesday’s Council meeting begins at 4:30 in the upper level of the Sheldon Community Services Center. If you’d like to join the meeting online, via Zoom, you can do so by CLICKING HERE.
