Counterfeit Money Circulating Our Area

Sioux County, Iowa — The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office wants to make citizens aware of counterfeit money circulating throughout the area, and to be on the lookout.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s office describes the “Funny Money” and they say it contains pink Chinese letters. This specific type of funny money circulating the area is used for training purposes in China. Chinese bank clerks use it to learn how to count and identify authentic American currency being passed or exchanged by business and leisure travelers in China.

This counterfeit money can be purchased online in denominations of five, ten, fifty, and hundred dollar bills. The bills are lighter and have a smoother texture than authentic bills.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office wants residents to know that It is not illegal to possess this counterfeit money, but it is illegal to attempt to purchase items with it. If you are suspecting that a bill that you were given is not legitimate, then citizens should call their local law enforcement and report it.
