COVID And It’s Effects On Sheldon Fall Sports

Sheldon, Iowa – The COVID-19 pandemic has affected nearly every aspect of our lives for the past several months, and Sheldon Community Schools Superintendent Cory Myer says the school district didn’t know what to expect regarding this fall’s sports seasons.

(as said) “We really weren’t sure what to expect, but just thrilled that we were able to get in all of our activities,” Said Myer, “And football, volleyball, cross country all had a lot of team and individual successes so we’re just very grateful for the kids that we have and the coaching staff and, of course, to be able to play those activities and games this year in light of COIVD is just a blessing.”

Myer praised the school’s coaches and players for their response to the situation.

(as said) “It’s just one of those things that we have to do at this point in time, and so, kudos to our kids, our coaching staff, everybody for doing what they need to do to make it happen.”

He says the Sheldon Orabs Marching Band had several of their events cancelled this fall due to COVID, but says he’s thankful that they were able to have all of their games. Myer says conversations are ongoing about the measures being put into place for the winter season of Orab Sports.

(as said) “Having a lot of conversation about how to reduce the number of spectators, but still making sure that our parents and our die-hard supporters can get in there and watch ball-games and activities, but just trying to do the best we can to provide a safe environment for our kids to compete as well.”

Myer says they are fortunate that they did not have to do many spectator reductions due to the size of the gym, but that may change during the basketball season.

(as said) “But as we get into basketball our crow sizes typically get a little larger, and so Mr. Mason will be putting out some additional information about what that will look like and some of those crowd reduction steps that we are gonna put into place.”
