December 2020 Warmer, Drier Than The Previous December

Sheldon, Iowa — December 2020 was warmer and drier in northwest Iowa than the December before.

The average high temperature for December 2020 was 36-degrees, which is some seven degrees warmer than the average high for December 2019, which was 29-degrees, and 6-degrees warmer than the average normal high for December. During the month just ended, the warmest high temperature of 55-degrees was reported on both December 10th and 23rd, while December 2019’s warmest high, recorded on December 22nd, was some 14-degrees cooler, at 41.

The coolest low temperature for the month of December 2020 was recorded on both Christmas Eve and Christmas day when the mercury dipped to -7, which is 3-degrees cooler than December 2019’s  coldest low, -4, which was recorded on December 12th 2019. The average low temperature for the December just passed was 14-degrees, or some 1-degree warmer than the 13-degree average low for December 2019, and 2-degrees warmer than the normal average low of 11-degrees.

As for precipitation, 0.67-inches of precipitation was recorded in Sheldon in December 2020, some 0.26″ below the normal December precipitation and 1.01-inches below the December 2019 level. 0.8-inches more snow than average fell in Sheldon in December 2020. The 8.5-inches was also 4.8-inches more than the previous December.
