Hull, Iowa — Staff from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources office in Spencer were dispatched Thursday (July 27th) to the report of a fish kill in a small creek that serves as a tributary to the West Branch of the Floyd River, on the southeast side of Hull.
DNR spokesman Ken Hessenuis tells us how the fish kill came to the DNR’s attention.
Hessenius talks about the steps taken once the DNR officials arrived at the scene of the fish kill.
He says their investigation revealed what the DNR has determined as the preliminary cause.
Hessenius says even small amounts of the chemicals can be toxic to fish.
The DNR estimates that about 36-hundred fish, mostly minnows, chubs and darters, were killed along 42-hundred feet of the stream.
The DNR says they will seek appropriate enforcement action in the matter, including fish restitution.
